On-Road Fuel Card Cloning
The ever-increasing cost of fuel and low awareness have allowed the practice of on-road fleet card cloning to grow significantly. Fleet cards have been used not only to purchase fuel, but if in collusion with the garage at the garage’s shop. This means that fleet transactions can be used to withdraw money through the shop’s register, buy food and buy fuel to sell. This means that a cloned card, if skilfully used, can accrue large amounts of charges over a period of time if suspicious activity is not investigated quickly. A rigorous check should be made for any suspicious transactions.
Suspicious transactions may include:
More than one transaction on a day (if this is against the fleet’s trend).
A round rand value, for example R50.
Fill-ups by one vehicle at stations distant from each other.
Repeated fill-ups at a specific station on multiple days (this occurs when a garage attendant clones card for own use).
